TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. The History Center of Traverse City is celebratingthe many building blocks that are the architectural foundation of this community. Lego Carnival features a village of buildings over 250 square feet and a Star Wars base camp.
Activities include a vehicle building area and 16’ test ramp that runs into a Lego wall for testing crash worthiness. “We made life-sized Lego blocks to allow children to go inside these magical blocks and building stations” said Bill Kennis, Executive Director. “There are hundreds of larger jumbo bricks to build castles and forts.”
The exhibit is a fun way to educate young people about our building heritage.These include the Perry Hannah House, the homes of Central Neighborhood, Old Town, and the Boardman Neighborhood, the Park Place Hotel, Opera House and, of course, the Historic Commons. Can you imagine TC without these building blocks? What about the railroad stations through which Traverse City sent lumber and cherries to the world? These are some of the building blocks of our community and with Lego allow children to create their own unique creations.
The exhibit runs through Memorial Weekend and is open Wednesday -Saturday 10-4 p.m. Children can excavate fossils, copper ingots and arrowheads in 2,000 lbs. of cherry pits and explore hands-on train and logging history in the Cupola.
“We are focused on a family friendly educational experience and are now open on Saturdays for families, students and tourists interested in our wonderful local history”, stated Bill Kennis. Look for a schedule of Lego classes and competitions on our website, www.traversehistory.org
Exhibit open daily Wednesday- Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission cost $5 adults and $3 youth.
